The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and WHO (World Health Organization) had convened a meeting of experts in November 2008, to review the major developments in the field of fats and fatty acids in human nutrition to update their 1994 report.The outcome of these experts’ meeting was published in a new report in February 2011.
The WHO/FAO report’s main dietary recommendation are that:
* Maximum total fat intake for adults should represent 30-35% energy and Saturated fatty acids intake 10% energy
* Saturated fatty acids should be replaced with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and recommended range for PUFA is 6-11% energy (ALA 0,5-2% energy, EPA+DHA 2g, LA 2-3% energy)
